Crossing borders with and in teacher education
The conference seeks to address the critical role of teacher education today: on the one hand as a means of responding to the complexities of our increasingly interconnected global landscape, and on the other hand as a field enriched by breaking down barriers between disciplines, actors, theory, and practice.
The conference offers the opportunity to examine the crossing of borders with and in teacher education in plural and nuanced ways, including but not limited to:
Teacher education often operates within national frameworks, shaped by government policies, cultural values, and pedagogical traditions. We invite speakers to explore the importance of transcending these geographical borders as a route towards fostering cross-border and global collaboration, exchanging best practices, and building interconnected classrooms.
Teacher education intersects with countless other academic disciplines, such as psychology, law, history, and so on. We invite speakers to discuss the crossing of these academic borders, championing inter- and/or multi-disciplinary approaches that enrich how teachers are prepared and equipped for their profession.
Educational institutions often work in silos, leading to limited collaboration between universities, schools, policymakers, and other potential stakeholders. We invite speakers to consider the value of breaking down these institutional borders, via creating partnerships and communities that work to align teacher education with what is really needed in the classrooms of today.
Contemporary teachers are navigating increasingly diverse cultural contexts within their classrooms on a day-to-day basis. We invite speakers to talk about the importance of empowering teachers via their initial education and continuous professional development to foster inclusivity, equity, and understanding in schools.
Both teacher educators and teachers themselves are increasingly called upon to push the boundaries of their traditional roles, pedagogies, and mindsets. We invite speakers to talk about topics such as innovative pedagogies, new routes into the teaching profession, and new methods of teacher professional development.
We live in a culture that conceives of time as linear; however, the field of teacher education stands to gain from both looking to the past and building on existing good practices in its move into the future. We invite speakers to adopt less or non-linear temporal lenses in looking at past, present, and future trajectories in teacher education
The conference will bring together stakeholders to exchange findings, share strategies, and forge partnerships.
